Samhain or Halloween
or really on this side of the world it should be Beltaine, celebrating the arrival of summer. However I am up to my eye balls in theory so I may just light I candle.

Lunch at Clipper with Bridget and Deb
Bridget is in town because of her show..which opened last Tuesday night at Glass Artists' Gallery. An opening is not quite the right arena for catching up so lunch was arranged (even if I should be writing an essay instead). Though really friends (especially those who don't live in Sydney) are more important than essays!
Maze support
After a chat with Marcus on Friday (or was it Thursday?), he is going to weld me some support for the maze a kind of cartwheel affair that we will attach to the table base..it will be, after all about 60kg or so...
This morning Dougie drove me to Mascot Steel for the primed SHS 25mm x 25mm 3mm. Cubular steel I call it. Nicole was very helpful..and told me about Hooper Bearings.

Maze section E and the centre
It took a while to melt and remove the wax from the centre piece. My poll on whether to paint the model people or not resulted in mainly 'unpainted', a few 'painted' and one 'mixed'.

One wrong dab of the paintbrush can make a big difference
I'm trying to make the decision about whether to paint the people or not. Left white they look more dream like, with colour more real....hmmm

'Bumping out' Ranamok
Well Ranamok has packed it's bags, ready to leave Sydney and on it's way to Brisbane. "Bump out' went pretty well. Packing up other peoples work really gives you an insight to how one should pack your own work.

Loading the furnace and cleaning the hot shop
Me and Ana, need I say more? Before going to the exhibition tonight I need a fair scrub.

Blowing with Nadine
Nadine set out to make a bowl with different coloured spots, by the time I had delivered the third colour the process was going well...the bowl kinds turned into a vessel thing. Instead of making billets for the maze we made a large bubble each..easier to smash.

swap?
Rob..in some trepidation asked me if I had thought of water jet cutting the maze. It would be quicker he said..all I would need to do is draw it up on a computer program. I seriously entertained that idea for a while as I am pressed for time since the centre had to be chucked.
Object theory for artists - 12
Our presentation on Originality was today! "In the Agora with Plato" went down well Adam at least..you would never know what the rest of the class are thinking.

Glow by Chunky Move
This was awesome! I was thrilled for the entire performance...Glow by Chunky Move
CONCEPT [from website]
Glow is an illuminating choreographic essay by Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek and interactive software creator Frieder Weiss.
Beneath the glow of a sophisticated video tracking system, a lone organic being mutates in and out of human form into unfamiliar, sensual and grotesque creature states.
Utilising the latest in interactive video technologies a digital landscape is generated in real time in response to the dancer’s movement. The body’s gestures are extended by and in turn manipulate the video world that surrounds it, rendering no two performances exactly the same
I can't embed the youtube clip so follow the link..now it works!

Time to give up
Ok I've had to abandon my first mould. I'll pour it differently next time..not in layers. The force of me pulling the softened wax out started pulling the first plaster layer off in parts and by Friday afternoon it was really messy. We tried to patch it up and air hose some of the bits out but it just made it worse. So my question is...To make it easier to steam out..do I make this section smaller?

Wax removal
This is quite time consuming...as you may have realised..this thing is quite big..I can't pick it up by myself. In the test piece I worked out that I could steam the wax out without having to turn it over. I would point the steamer hose down on the 'hedges' and scoop and peel the wax out of the cavities. It took all evening to get this far and I've broken a few bits.
Flipping the pancake
HOW am I going to do this? |
aha! Rob why didn't I think of you before? |
