As I am re shooting the animation part to allow for the slightly different positioning of the glass pieces for the hatched show, I have transformed my bathroom into a studio. There's a fair bit or rope and masking tape making sure things stay in place. The lighting isn't exactly bright enough (feels like it, but the proof of the photographs shows not) but needs must!

All packed for PICA!
and the second batch of work ready to go...at last. I love these plastic packing boxes. They are sturdy, have self locking lids, nest..what more do you want! Each piece is nested in layers of custom cut styrofoam sheeting. That hot wire unit is awesome, you can cut the most intricate shapes with it! Seriously, it takes 'almost' as much time to pack the work than to make it.

National Student Art Glass Prize 2012
The official 'mayoral' event at the National Glass Collection is tonight, but I'm in Wagga Wagga by 9.30 to check out the exhibition before the hoards swamp the work and to check on how my work was installed. I was quite surprised at how well the projection showed in daylight. The projection area was a little small but the ceiling couldn't really be made higher so I was happy with the resolution that the gallery came up with.
So enough about my work! All I can say is thank goodness I didn't have to judge this show, picking a winner would have been incredibly hard.
I was so impressed with the level of work on display. Given that it is a graduate survey show (over 30 works from students around the country) I was also struck with the curatorial effort given by the gallery to carefully place and arrange pieces to their best advantage while creating a holistic visual effect.
My favourites would have to be ...(I need the catalogue for this) but Anabell's was a favourite.
The winner was Chris Boha a student from Adelaide uni...correction University of South Australia.
Katie-Ann's work 'a thousand ways to skin a cat' was bought by the gallery, a sound strategy on their part as I reckon her work will be collectible one day not so far away and that will be the cheapest price that they will ever get.
This evening was also a great opportunity to catch up with some of my favourite glassy people.

Wheels and plastic boxes..oh my!
The crates I made with Jono's help for the exhibition in Wagga were great, however they did take a bit of time. Also material wise I used the remainder of the MDF that I had bought for the 2 plinths. So, now I need a second set for the work being sent to Perth. Something made me remember a conversation with Grace Fine art removals. The topic was more about having to treat wood being used in packaging for sending work overseas and one of the reps remarked that you could just use plastic crating!
So having used up all my left overs, I was thinking why don't I get plastic boxes? Though if you think of the kind of boxes you buy in Kmart or the like...fragile! That type won't manage the distance home let alone to Perth and back. After a lot of internet searching (easy to find plastic crates to hire) I came across REFLEX equip (nothing to do with copy paper). Who stock, among other things security crates. I scheduled a time with Dougie to drive to Wetherill Park and look at the heavenly vision that is Reflex equip!

A small valentin'es poem by Neil Gaiman
One of my favourite writers put this on his blog today...it made me LOI (laugh onthe inside)
Roses are red,
Violets are purple,
Which is a very hard word to rhyme
And makes me happy that on February the 14th we don't traditionally have to give each other oranges.

CGS International Artists Exhibition
The Contemporary Glass Society (UK) are having an online 'International Artists exhibition'. I got in!
Check out my entry 'Into the woods' (like you haven't seen that!) and the other 43 artists shown here.
There are a lot of Australians in the line up.
I like 'Frozen forest' by Leigh Roberts, 'Forgotten threads of intimacy' by Sarah Davis (Hi Sarah!) and 'Soul of emptiness' by Pilar Aldana-Mendez and many more.

Happy Birthday Betty
As you see, this is a themed card. This morning Betty and I went up in a Seaplane, over the city and far away.
Well as far as palm beach and back anyway.
The pilot timed it well, so the massive down pour happened AFTER we landed and crossed the jetty.

Sydney festival first night
'As the world tipped' had to be the best part of festival first night. The combination of large scale projection with aerial acrobatics, choreographed brilliantly to make a very compelling piece of theatre and storytelling. Inspiring.

Glassimation
Apparently last year Pilchuck ran a course called Glassimation. Here is the video of the resulting work (thanks Deb for the heads up). Seems that I now have a genre!

The world's your oyster Jon
Dougie's friend Jon is 'retiring'. Dougie wanted a card and he gave me a fairly specific brief. A font like 'Indiana Jones' and to use some of Jon's hobbies and interests as illustration for a card that holds a voucher for a Yachting experience for two. This is what I came up with after some input from the creative director.
Jon's farewell party was also part of his work Christmas party, so we had a chance to relax down by the John Oxley.

More waiting
I guess I freaked out today. I knew working with after effects was going to be challenging. Only because I have used it very little. I couldn't remember all the steps and my notes didn't cover everything that Jack showed me. So a bit of a panic. After 4-5 hours playing around with the program I seem to be getting somewhere.
I have a basic test..that is STILL rendering. WAITING!

Waiting
for over 500 images to download...
It's hot, humid and almost 2am. The mosquitos haven't given up yet, and neither have I. ...images waiting in the transfer queue is now 326 and then I'll go and take some more shots for my animation.
I haven't blogged much recently, Graduation show is only days away (tuesday coming) and the pressure is on. Every minute is allocated for. Including the ones around 3am.

More books on the wanted list
A dictionary of British folktales in the English language [Set 1 Narratives set two Legends] by Katherine M. Briggs, here's is the Folio Society's publication and their youtube promo. As lovely as they are I don't think I could afford the Folio editions, there are paperback copies out there!

Some like it... hotter
phew, today was hot, about 32c....which is lovely unless you also spend 6 hours of it in the hotshop blowing glass. For the evening shift Nadine and I took a break after each object, letting the pink from our faces fade before we got back into it. Lots of water was consumed, but somehow it is never enough.

another day another book that I want
Thanks to Sur La Lune's 'Library essentials month' there is yet another book that I need to get. I did check the university library for "The great fairytale tradition: From Straparola and Basile to the Brothers Grimm" well I searched by the first part of the title..to which the search results asked
"Did you mean the 'the great air table production'?" NO I did NOT....wait you mean there's a book on that? and no there is no result to that search either..which begs the question why did you suggest it you idiotic catalogue search.
So since the library doesn't have it, I'll have to get a copy.

Big cat you tube clips
These have been very helpful, for getting the 'big cat' movements for Cinderella's last transformation. This is more for my records than for the few blog readers...though the pumpkins one is quite amusing

Sur La Lune's 'Library essentials month'
October is designated as "library essentials month' over at the Sur La Lune blog. This is a fairy tale resource that I have gone back to over and over again, one of the first I found on the internet...and I think the other day on the blog Heidi mentioned that the Sur La Lune website is pre google..and I think that sounds right. Anyway I have a feeling that I will eventually want all of her recommended library essentials.
I had an unscheduled visit to Fisher library this morning, where they have shelves and shelves on fairy and folk tales. Thanks to Heidi's list I was able to grab some that I knew would be good.
Not on the list but another book alert from Sur La Lune is 'The Fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm' published by Taschen. Here are some excerpts of the book from the Taschen website. It is of course available on Amazon.

Paper Cutting: Contemporary Artists, Timeless Craft
This book 'Paper Cutting: Contemporary Artists, Timeless Craft' by Laura Heyenga is doing the rounds of all the paper cutting blogs at the moment... looks good. (and not too pricey either)
