Artist of the day: Matthew Day Perez

"Matthew Day Perez Received his BFA from Illinois State University and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He works primarily with glass, printed matter, digital media, and installation. Most recently he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to undertake research at the Australian National University. During this period he will generate a body of work that will be shown in 2012. Matt came to the SCA glass studio to give an artist talk and a demonstration last year. Many of us were impressed with his artistic practice. In his slide show, he showed us some works (similar to the one pictured above) that were made in a very innovative way (to me at least). The model and the mould were made at the same time. ? Well, imagine making the model of the one above in wax, difficult enough in its self, then imagine making the mould (all those finicky places to reach!!) Instead think of making the layers. Wax, plaster, wax plaster and drilling in between those layers to make connections. So wax becomes glass, and so does the drilled out holes..make sense? Probably not the way I've tried to explain it...but it set something off in my head, I would never have thought to do that. It makes the product a little more unknowable and I like that.

Artist of the day: Su Blackwell

Su Blackwell is an artist and art director, working predominantly within the realm of paper. Her sculptures realise in tangible form the reading experience where small words create large worlds, the page literally jumps out of the book into fantastic ethereal woods, figures and landscapes.

Below are excerpts from her profile.
”I often work within the realm of fairy-tales and folk-lore. I began making a series of book-sculpture, cutting-out images from old books to create three-dimensional diorama’s, and displaying them inside wooden boxes”.
”For the cut-out illustrations, I tend to lean towards young-girl characters, placing them in haunting, fragile settings, expressing the vulnerability of childhood, while also conveying a sense of childhood anxiety and wonder. There is a quiet melancholy in the work, depicted in the material used, and choice of subtle colour.”

After looking at her blog, I realise that I have missed out on a paper workshop course run by the V&A: Fairy tales and fables, Paper art, Sold out! Not that I could go any way..living on the other side of the world..but I would have loved to have done it.

Artist of the day: Karen Richards

Thank you Sarah for this tip off on textile artist Karen Richards...

Karen Richards is an awarding winning Australian textile artist. Situated at the end of the Great Ocean Rd, Karen produces embroidery in a range of styles from her lavish narrative pieces noted for their dark humor to her more recent fine lace sculptures and banners. Karen is an RMIT Textile Design (Weave) graduate, a member of Hurrah! and teaches in the Studio Textile program at South West TAFE.
In 2009 Karen won the PFAFF International Embroidery as Art Excellence Award for her piece Ruined Forest as well as the Australian Cotton Expo Machine Embroidery award for her piece Minhamite.

..brought to my attention by my glass teacher Kirstie Rea..because of the work "Australian Ravens (2007)" currently showing at 'Something in the air: Collage and assemblage in Canberra Region Art' at the Canberra Museum and Gallery from 19 June to10 October 2010.

Artist of the day: Kendal Murray

I have been meaning to put up some of Kendal Murray's work since I went to Coffs a few weeks ago and saw a solo exhibition. The 'compact' scenes capture your interest in their miniature presence but then you look into the mirror and see the tableau afresh.

Janice Vitkovsky: Artist of the Day

 The more I look at her works the more I love them. Gorgeous on pure visuals but the concept works for me too.

I can just imagine our thoughts and perceptions being materialised and captured like this. The sense of movement from line and depth convey the feeling that our ideas move and shift slightly (or radically) once they are formed. Particles of vivid colour ripple explode and shift, suspended for a moment in clear minimalist slabs of glass. Viewing Vitkovsky’s works from many angles gains the viewer a shifting, mutable perspective. The perception of light and shadow between the clear and coloured elements create depth and cast illusions; a backlit dust storm gathering momentum, the quicksilver sinuous dance of a shoal of Mackeral, the undulating scales of a serpent or the crashing spume of the sea. The evocative imagery that Vitkovsky’s works conjures up, are about the sensations of the ephemeral, from one fixed moment in time to the next. After flying and falling through her work the artist’s term ‘immersive’ is apt. Her work matches her ideas on how emotions and thoughts affect perceptionby the non representational forms.

Artist of the Day: Etsuko Ishigawa

So mesmerising...Etsuko Ishigawa says about her work
"My “glass pyrographs” are made by drawing hot molten glass, which is one way to capture and eternalize the immediacy of a moment, while my hanging and floating installations are about ever-changing states of mind."

Artist of the Day: Adrian Arleo

Quite a few years ago I bought a book on Artists who use the figure in clay for my mother. One of the artist's work caused areaction of repulsion and attraction. I have thought of the works every now and then wishing I knew the artists name. On a recent visit to my parents property I saw the book and quickly found the images that had so touched me before. I still feel the same way.

Last weekend we visited the National Art Glass collection in Wagga Wagga. At the moment on display (upstairs) is part of the Gallerie's own collection and on the ground level part of the 'Kerfoot' Art glass collection. This is where I cam across Rob Knottenbelt's work for the first time. It is fantastic to see works that so far I have only seen on the 'glossy page' in the flesh

As I was searching for artists using myth, folk & fairy tales in their work I found a site called Taxidermy: Ravishing beasts which led me to a group of artists who call themselves the idiots
who use taxidermy and mixed media.
"Getting into science" & "Ophelia" are close favourites..Mickey was amusing also.
